Since this is an Id Software game, you can add

+set com_allowConsole 1

to the games launch perameter to simplify bringing the console down. Instead of pressing CTRL+ALT+~ you can simply press the ~ key now.

Right click on the game in Steam and choose Properties.
On the General Tab, click Set Launch Options.
Add +set com_allowConsole 1
Click OK, then Close, and then launch the game

I'm working on it, but all the "traditional" console cheats are cheat protected.
