Now, first and foremost, I am an Atheist, I obviously do not believe in hell. However it has come to me attention that many Christians and soft Catholics do not, and I am not sure why.

Secondly, I would like all too know the story behind the modern, if you can call it that, construct of what Hell is. The word Sheol in the old testimate meant grave and had nothing to do with with an afterlife. Gehenna was a dumb outside of Jerusalem where they would dump the bodies of poor people and sinners, burning them. Hades and Tartarus are borrowings from Greek mythology of a Hell already constructed in the past. Ands then Hel from Norris mythology which is where the modern word comes from.

So, taking all this information into consideration I would like to know people's opinion and if this helped shape it in any way.

the concept of Hell goes much further back that Christianity.

It has been called many things throughout the ages, the underworld, the netherworld..etc. but the concepts has always remained the same. It is a place where the human souls of sinners and evil-doers are sent to be eternally punished for their evil deeds and mistakes.

Due to my status on this website, i will not continue to elaborate on this subject in a public board for fear of a heated religious debate, as we have had many in the past. So consider this a warning to all who post in this topic. You are entitled to your opinion so long as it does not intentionally bash or degrade the beliefs of another individual

I believe that the concept of Hell might have been one way of people consoling themselves by saying that those who do evil will be punished and they will suffer eternally in pits of agony and darkness. It could be humanity's ever-active quest for justice, vengeance or a sort of equilibrium.

It could also have been an attempt by high priests and religious leaders to subdue the unruly masses if they ever attempted to uproot the clergy and replace it with new clerics stating that those who commit violence against priests suffer a most terrifying fate.

In my opinion Hells and underworlds were created to fulfill the purpose of "horrifying bailiff" in order to institute order amongst the uneducated masses.

    Actually the Underworld =/= Hell.

The Underworld was divided into different sections based upon how people had lived their lives, and while there was a section for punishment there were also sections for the pure, the good and the average. The reason behind this being that human souls didn't ascend to the same place as the Gods unless they were granted Godhood.

Personally, I don't believe in Hell. I don't believe in the Devil either.

Nope. Earth is hell, we as individuals have to try to make our own heaven on this hell. When you die, you go back to nothingness just like it was before you were born.

I believe in hell as much as I believe in heaven.

So in other words - Its nothing but a work of an imaginative fellow thousands of years ago. IMO these two "places" were just created to instill fear in people so they don't even think of committing sins and commit good deeds instead so they get the bliss of heaven.

Life is best for those who enjoy it, difficult for those who analyze it and worst for those who criticize it.

I'm more of a 'our souls will roam the earth forever' type of person. It would be nice if there was an afterlife of some sort, mainly because my biggest fear about death is the thought of total nothingness, and not even knowing that there is total nothingness, in which case I shouldn't be worried but still, you get the idea.
