I am able to use the rank up and add xp functions on generals fine but don't seem to be able to do the same for regular units.

If it is supposed to work for them, could someone post a step by step guide of how to do it as I seem to be missing something.

I'm in the same boat. Pressing + has no effect. And pressing 8 only affects the diamyo or general. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I haven't figured out how to upgrade regular units.

This is not an error. The trainer is only designed to give xp to characters, not units.
