Forgot to mention it, this is the 7th largest earthquake in the recorded history of the world, not just Japan.

Good god, it's like as soon as one country gets a break, another country gets hit even harder than the last. But it is true about Japan being ready for this kind of thing, the death toll shouldn't get too high, and although only 19 confirmed deaths so far for such a powerful earthquake is encouraging, even though it would be horrible for their family and friends.

Hopefully they'll be alright, and that Japan will recover soon after all this is over.

I'm a bit worried about the tsunami's though, about half my family lives in Papua New Guinea, but now that I think about it most of them live towards the southern shore so they should be alright.

According to the BBC report it's going to hit New Zealand and Chile as well.

Apparently Japan was predicted to get one, I assume that's why they had preparations in place. Prevention has lessened the death toll, and with people in other countries evacuating right now it should lessen the global death toll.

Also: BBC report says the death toll is 44.

This is awful. Another country hit by a massive disaster, I hope the death toll doesn't get as high as the one here. I have to agree with dstates that they are well prepared and should be able to manage this well, especially with the way the world has been rallying around all the other countries hit lately by massive quakes, I just hope nothing else goes wrong.

I feel bad for the team of specialized urban search and rescue workers who are over here from Japan as well, they must be wishing they were home to help out right now.

And yea we're on Tsunami alert here, but apparently it's unlikely if we do get hit that it will be big enough to do any real damage.

    :/

no, neo is not in japan.

Japan has a very advanced infrastructure. The harbors of their major coastal cities are very well protected, and the nation as a whole, infact, is very well prepared for this type of disaster. i don't feel that the number of casualties arising from this will be very high, and afterwards japan will bounce back very quickly to repair any damage done.

Preperation was not scaled for the power of an 8.9 earthquake though. This is really bad.

    Your bitterness, I will dispel

That's sad and unfortunate. The good thing to know is that there aren't (At least I hope for) that many casualties.

If we just rewind ourselves to last year, the Haiti quake killed well over 300000 people.

My heart goes out to all those involved in this catastrophe.

Hopefully relief aid can get out there quickly and the resulting tsunamis from this whole thing don't hit anything major.
