Some have no restrictions to level, but have restrictions on other things.
For instance I do believe like Everquest 2 you can't use the Auction House in Lord of the Rings online.
One game that does require a subscription is Eve Online but you can actually buy game time with in game money, People will buy a 60 day game card and convert it to 2 PLEX's which can be sold usually for 300million game money for 30 days subscription, the developers don't lose anything as they had to buy the 60 days anyways.
If you have a friend with a bit o cash in the game, he can send you the money and you can buy a plex and get the 30 days (they are not stingy and actually add it onto your 14 day trial time (trial is limited to what you can learn and pilot) or 21 days if your friend refers you).
Oh and Don't forget some tuts on ASM and defeating DMA

Ever tried a text based MMO, I uses to play this one called Asylum Mud. Its alot better then it sounds once you adjust to that kind of game. It does take quite abit of getting uses to, but pretty good once you get fluent at those kind of text based games.

It's a while since I've played, but I recall Adventure Quest starting an MMO, with a paid section and a free section. Free has limits with communication, but otherwise it was pretty much the same.
That being said, AQ is a bit... meh.
