It happens. I've been here long enough to see the cycle. Honestly I couldn't tell you if there were more active members when I was a newbie or if it just seemed that way because I didn't know all of them and a lot of the site was still 'mysterious'.
Cheathappens membership is still growing, its over ten times what it was when I joined, I think. Maybe the board activity is just more evenly spread and less noticeable to those who cruise the social boards?
the site itself has seen a massive rise in activity since i joined...but activity on the message boards has dropped steadily over the past 5 years....back in the day we would have 10 active newbies on the boards every month, with an average of 4 or 5 getting banned soon after they joined. now i see 1-3 newcomers every month and they very rarely stick around.
forums aren't cool anymore. people come here for the trainers, not for the community.
im afraid we will never see the energy of the 'old days' on these boards again. these message boards have seen their prime and passed it by.

I come on the forums here quite frequently and often just lurk, but often I've found that a lot of topics are you "oldies" chatting within your own little group and for a newbie such as myself joining in the discussion seems a little intrusive.

not just the trainers...but its the community too which made it fun here..Nic/FFQueen with her RPG game OTDs and Dhampy with his drunken posts etc. made it really fun. now its a bit quiet here. maybe things will pick after a while.

tis ashame that you feel that way. i had hoped that by now the general anti-newb mindset of veteran members would have mostly faded away since we dont get many new members on the forums these days.
i wouldn't worry too much about being 'intrusive'. everyone here generally appreciates anyone's input on a discussion regardless of their join date.
take Dhampy as a good example...well not a good example but an example nonetheless. as a newbie he dove into the forums face-first(mainly because he was drunk) and now he's like family to all the us vet members here...yuh kno, like the creepy uncle that always smells like scotch and beef jerky
<_<
