Our first matchup is....
Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron.
A cavalry officer, he joined the German Air Service in 1915, joined the elite Jasta 2 in 1916, became commander of Jasta 11 in 1917 and then took command of an entire wing--Jadgdeschwader 1, also known as the "flying circus"--the first ever command of its type in world history.
He was shot down and killed in 1918 over Amien.
He amassed 80 kills in his short career.
He's the best known fighter pilot of all time.
Soontir Fel, Baron of the Empire
Born on Corella, Baron Fel enrolled in the Imperial Academy and trained as a TIE pilot. He excelled in training.
However, outside events conspired to send him to the 181st Imperial Fighter Wing, which he quickly transformed into the Empire's premiere fighter unit.
Defecting to the New Republic and joining Rogue Squadron and then being recaptured by the Empire, he found himself in the employ of Thrawn's Empire of the Hand and later became a high ranking officer in the Chiss Ascendancy.
He would be disgraced and removed, but his son would become Emperor.
I wonder which way I'll vote through all of this...
(also, better pic of Fel Link)
Oh, and the Baron flew without shields

Not knowing the whole story will do that.
He entered the Imperial Academy, then defected to the Rebels when he saw what the Emperor truly was: a biased, alien-hating misogynist dinosaur. He was later captured by Isard and handed over to Thrawn, who convinced him that there was a threat outside the galaxy far more dangerous and important to the Imperials and Rebels than anything that had ever appeared before. So that's why he stuck with Thrawn.
