I'm glad we have to resort to propaganda in order to rid ourselves of personal vices...
Pictures on a box that you already purchased will discourage no one.
I agree; most of these warnings just won't make a difference to the typical, smoking consumers. They will tend to ignore them, but the question is this: will they ignore this one?

"The new warning labels will cover the top half of a pack on the front and back. They'll also have to make up 20% of advertisements."
Where's electronic cigarettes when you need them? Oh yeah, they do exist... except they cost more. Even though I have never smoked in my life, I bet that the typical smoker spends a fortune on myriad packs of cigarettes every year than the person who electronically smokes nicotine. It really makes you think.

I don't know about America but in Canada the boxes have pictures of lungs riddled with cancer and rotten teeth. If that doesn't stop people cartoons definitely aren't.
As far as I'm concerned governments should forget about trying to find new ways to stop people from smoking and just start suing tobacco companies for the health costs of treating the resulting cancer patients.

heh that would hurt them as well SuperSkyline89. Putting those images in packs is the easier solution when you want to seem like you're doing something to stop people from smoking.

Those we're closest to can betray us,and total strangers can come to our rescue. In the end, most people decide to trust only themselves. It really is the simplest way to keep from getting burned.

Politicians in the Canadian government have actually been throwing around the idea of suing the tobacco companies for a while. It costs them billions in health care bills and it's basically earning a profit while leaving taxpayers to pick up the long term bill.
The tobacco companies will raise prices but cigarettes are one of the most inelastic products on the planet so they'll still sell like crazy.
