As alcatraz said, you need to keep pushing the space bar fast as you can, not just once if that's the case.

Had the same issue, changed the short key from space to T, hammered away, it worked, changed back to space after and continued through the game.
That one took me some time to figure out. Dont ask why it messes up that way, got no answer to that, only that it worked for me with that solution.
