So recently my xbox 360 got the red ring of death, and I'm sure it's past its warranty. Long story short, I'm going to most likely buy the new one that's out. My only question is, can I use an external hard drive that plugs into a usb port? I don't feel like spending 300$ on a new system just for the hard drive, and I already have a 500 GB hard drive, so I want know if I can just use that instead if possible.

    Thanks

I think 16 GB is the max allowed for USB devices.

16gb for a single device, you can use to Flashdrives and the xbox will combine it into a 32gb device.

    Ah lame.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I just won't buy a new xbox 360 for quite awhile.

You could just buy one of the original Arcade models. They're only $150 and you can just use your original hard drive. Plus they have HDMI ports now so you can use HD and surround sound.

I did that when my 360 broke last month.

No one in my town sells the arcade models anymore. And if i'm going to spend that much, I might as well get the nice one and go all out. I can afford it, I just don't want to spend that much money for something I don't really play often. I may just wait until I get my bonus.
