Recently AMD/ATI announced the new 6000 series GPU's.
The 6850 and 6870...
Here are the specs..
First the 6850
Bus Type PCI-E 2.1 Performance Standard GPU Clock MHz 775 MHz Stream Processors 960 Memory Interface Bus (bit) 256 Memory Type DDR5 Memory Size (MB) 1024 MB Memory Clock (MHz) 4000 MHz Microsoft® DirectX® Support 11 Open GL Optimization and Support 3.2 Cooling Fansink √ ROHS √ Profile Double ATI Radeon CrossFireX™ Technology
ATI CrossFireX™Technology with up to quad GPU support offers superior scalability so your system is ready to level up when you are. √ ATI Radeon PowerPlay™ √ Dimensions (Imperial) 9.25 x 4.4 x 1.5 Max Resolution Analog 2048 x 1536 Max Resolution Digital 2560 x 1600 ATI Eyefinity Technology √ DisplayPort 1
The 6870
Bus Type PCI-E 2.1 Performance Standard GPU Clock MHz 900 MHz Stream Processors 1120 Memory Interface Bus (bit) 256 Memory Type DDR5 Memory Size (MB) 1024 MB Memory Clock (MHz) 4200 MHz Microsoft® DirectX® Support 11 Open GL Optimization and Support 3.2 Cooling Fansink √ ROHS √ Profile Double ATI Radeon CrossFireX™ Technology √ ATI Radeon PowerPlay™ √ Dimensions (Imperial) 10.3 x 4.4 x 1.5 Max Resolution Analog 2048 x 1536 Max Resolution Digital Maximum Screen Resolution indicates the maxiumum possible sharpness and clarity of an image that a monitor can display, measured in number of dots (pixels). 2560 x 1600 ATI Eyefinity Technology √ DisplayPort 2
First thing that stands out is the memory clock at 4000 and 4200 respectively it is the fastest calculating GPU out there, BUT, the Nvidia cards triumph with onboard Physx and Cuda support. These cards are best suited for a CPU with core speeds of 2.6ghz or higher, over 3.0ghz recommended (quad core even more so) so that one core will emulate Physx and Cuda and leave other cores to do more work elsewhere.
But this is something that may intice people..
The prices for the 6850 is in the UK approx. £150-160
And the 6870's retail around £190-200
So they have combated the recent Nvidia cards.
But... How do they run?
From benchmarks etc I have seen, they seem stable but are noisy at the moment, ATI can't keep up with the 460GT's silent fan system which is still the best, but with a combination hex-core AMD CPU and the 6850 Games were flying smoothly, Fallout NV was tested and looked amazing.
So if you have an AMD CPU and a Via chipset grab yourself one of these, it is a cheap ATI card finally.

well 5870 is stronger than 6870. lol,if you want a strong pc for gaming, stick with 5 series, but if you want some overclock buy new 6 series, i am a gamer, not overclocker so i'm not gonna buy it.

But, and now the ATI numbering scheme is even more confusing, what with rebranding half the 5 series as the new 6 series.
And I can't recall right now, is it true that ATI is releasing the low-end cards first?

People dont realise the clock speed on the series 6 is faster than the series 5, not by much but it is true, its like the 460 to nvidia's 480. Cheaper and runs just as well with missing extra's.
