There is a fix that fixes that, and some other issues (that i didnt really notice), but you lose your savegame. And for the sake of rules I can only help you via PM if you want it. The fix that is. But you will have to restart your game or get a save from another person with the fix applied.
You can equip it... I tried that also until I found the way to switch between them. Controls do s**k...that's correct and that takes some getting used to.

Try this: If one of the gear gets stuck, enter Chaos mode and press + or - to change the gear, then leave Chaos mode.
I had this problem too. And I spent 3 hours looking for a solution. Still, my last save was 6 hours ago. Oh and there is another way to enter Chaos mode: Caps Lock + Middle Mouse Button. It's only mentioned in the game once, and nowhere else.
After giving Tiamat's hear to Samael...I have to go past this crystal barricade...But I was unable to equip the Crossblades, even with your method. When I enter chaos mode and press - or +, I do get the crossblade in that slot, but it is again swapped by that bloody horn when I exit chaos mode.
Any fix to this? This is really disauding me as I am unable to make any progress since hours now.

I was going crazy thinking the chaos mode was not helping me either with my no-equip problem with Mercy. Then I found an additional detail somewhere else, stating that while in chaos mode, change to the ranged weapon that is stuck, vs. changing to the one that isn't working, then exit chaos mode. e.g. if the only middle-button weapon that is working is the crossblade, and you can't equip mercy, switch to chaos mode, change the middle-button weapon to the crossblade, then exit chaos mode. Mercy is now able to be equipped. I was about to uninstall this game until I found that workaround.
To make matters worse, I was stuck at the first worm boss fight with no Mercy, and you can't switch to Chaos mode on that level. Luckily I had a save game that was 1 hour previous, so it wasn't too terrible to backtrack.

This method worked for me. Sorry for reopening an old post here, but if it ever happens to another player they can find another confirmation of this solution taking care of the issue without having to start the game all over.
