Try this: If one of the gear gets stuck, enter Chaos mode and press + or - to change the gear, then leave Chaos mode.
I had this problem too. And I spent 3 hours looking for a solution. Still, my last save was 6 hours ago. Oh and there is another way to enter Chaos mode: Caps Lock + Middle Mouse Button. It's only mentioned in the game once, and nowhere else.
The Scythe is a Secondary Weapon used with Right Mouse, there are only two secondary weapons, the Scythe and the Tremor Gauntlet, which are toggled with the Tab key by default.
If you bought the scythe when you first met Vulgrim, all you have to do to use it is right click.

i know when i got the crossblade i was like what the why wont these things switch but figured out i had to hold tab a second or 2 and when i release the panel would stay there then i could press the number which was so weird lol silly me thining it was like capslock items where i had to keep holding the tab button....

Yeah, if i knew sooner i wouldnt update, cause i lost my savegame Does anyone know if update fixes that? Problem with the glaive.I also had a problem when i got the gun, i couldnt equip it. Also, can gun be fired while climbing on cables? cus i got stuck in the desert with the cable and the 3 suckers above it.
I had no problems after the update. Can't remember if you could use the gun from cables.. don't think so. I think the sword is the only weapon it'll let you use.
On a side note, whoever designed the soul keeper bosses in the black tower needs to be drawn and quartered. I've never wanted to shoot myself before but after killing all 3 of them I had the urge.
