I typically enjoy competitive multiplayer, though I hate CoD and MoH. Never played a full game of Battlefield, but from what I've seen the multiplayer is very much like a high octane action movie from start to finish (if you're any good at the game anyway), and I can get behind that if I'm in the right "state of mind". Halo has always been a different story for me though, because it's a proper arena shooter and arena shooters are where it's at competitive-wise, and it has an excellent single player. Halo, until 343i got their hands on it, had always been story first, multiplayer second. Hell, the deathmatch in CE was a last minute addition to the game and it turned out great! Unfortunately, 343i has decided that the multiplayer needed to be more like other shooter games out there and kind of ruined it for their fans, imo.
I see what you're saying, tons of games at present are pushing multiplayer first, single player second. Games like Destiny and The Division are two that come to mind. Hell, Borderlands was semi-guilty of it too, though it actually had the option to play strictly single player. It gets a bit frustrating when you want to play something on your own and the only options are older games that you've already played eighty times over.
