It doesn't matter what your intentions were, they were obviously offending other users and was asked to step in. You were handling things in an very insensitive way.
No but your ego has a tendency to grow to some extreme levels (with you being quite oblivious to it) and some people were ready to unleash some flames. Do not want that.
