black is the absorption of all colors of the spectrum
"Pitch Black" (or more accurately referred to as total darkness) is the absence of light. If there is no light to be reflected, then every object will appear black which means that it does not matter what color your sheets are if you cannot see in total darkness.
Having no light produces the same result as an object absorbing all spectrum colors: The object will not reflect a distinct color.

What is wrong from protecting your friend? You've already tried reasoning with him now you have to go a step higher. Sometimes to get someone to see truth, you must do it by force and against his will.
Simply put you have two options: Give yourself the bad image to help a friend or let him fall into despair once he finds it out himself.
