@Hobbes: His basic assumption is that a world without government is a "state of nature", in which people are bound by no moral or legal codes and can do as they will. It's, as he said, "bellum omnium contra omnes" or "war of all against all.
Later, he argues that governments themselves exist in a state of nature in respects to other governments. I agree with this.
Hobbes created an entire philosophic framework and used it to logically prove all of his assertions. No one opposed to him argues against him, they argue around him. That is the ultimate respect one can pay.
